It is a small indigenous community of 50 people in the Republic of Panama. Our community, Puru Biakirú, was founded on Thursday, May 31, 2018. Today, the community is known as Puru Biakirú, which in the Emberá dialect means “beautiful town.”
The first individuals to settle were the Ruiz family: Elias Ruiz and his wife Alicia Caisamo, and their five children: Eneldo Ruiz, Ángel Ruiz, Euclides Ruiz, Ivan Ruiz, and Eliecer Ruiz. They left the Darién province in the 1970s in search of a better life near Panama City.

What we offer is often referred to as cultural ecotourism. The cultural aspect means visitors meeting and interacting with us; the ecological aspect means they learn about the rainforest with a low impact on our natural environment and way of life.
Visitors come here to experience nature, but they don’t take the plants and animals with them when they leave. Instead, they take a souvenir of their unique experience—lots of photographs!

Tourism has proven to be a very good option for our community. It has a low environmental impact, yet is sustainable over the long term. And most importantly for us, tourism has sparked a renaissance in our traditional Emberá arts and culture.
